ANGEL DROPPED ME OFF at the lodge. I hurried inside and showered. When I slid the shower door open and reached for a towel, I caught sight of a silhouette beyond reach of the bathroom’s light.

Suzette. Darkness enveloped the room behind her. A black negligee covered little of her body. She knew I could not resist the sight of her dressed in that manner.

I dried my face and wrapped the towel around my waist.

“There’s no need for that.” She backed into the darkness.

I let the towel fall to the tiled floor and dripped a trail across the hardwood floor. Suzette lowered herself onto the bed. The way she crabbed backwards could in no way suggest retreat. She wanted me. I was prepared and willing to grant her request.

“I couldn’t wait,” she said.

She extended her right hand and took mine. The contact certified full control over my being. The intimacy completed us the same as the first time we were ever together in that way. Our closeness dominated the early morning hours of that Saturday. Suzette and Ridge merged. We possessed one another.

“I couldn’t wait.” Suzette repeated the only words she had uttered since I climbed on the bed with her. Then she said, “How far would you go to protect me?”

My answer came without hesitancy. “You should know that by now.”

She kissed me and squirmed off the bed. “I’d better get out of here.” She pulled on her jeans and shirt. “Whatever happens in the next few days, I want you to know I trust your judgment.”

“I know.”

We hugged and kissed at the door.

“I love you, Ridge. I’ll see you as soon as I can.”

I told Suzette I loved her and watched her get in a car I had never seen. She drove toward Colorado Springs.

I looked at the sky. I wished my mind could be as clear as the night. I backed inside and laid face down on the bed. The sheet smelled like Suzette.

Sleep evaded me. Everything since my arrival in Woodland Park blitzed and gored my thoughts. This was one of those times when nothing worked for me to clear my head and fall asleep. After thirty minutes of fighting to push away thoughts and relax, I got out of bed and walked to the window. I whipped open the drapes and gazed through misted glass to the rising landscape behind the lodge. Did I expect to see something I knew was not there?

I checked the front window. Upon seeing the space near the door, I realized my BMW was still at Hollister’s. The Meades’ sedan filled a space three over from where mine should have been. The Lexus reminded me of whatever-it-is Angel’s father told me he and Mrs. Meade wanted to give me if I would stop by their suite. That was hours ago. Too late now. I would see them, apologize for not stopping by and... What was I going to tell them? I had to think of something. From the day I met Angel’s parents, I found them to be astute and protective when it came to their daughter.
